Like every generation before them, Millennials carry a vast array of interests, hobbies, and views of the world that they work and play in. Although many choose to focus on the Millennial Lifestyle through a professional lens, there’s far more to this demographic than the time they spend at the office or in front of a glowing screen.

Millennial CEO is excited to share that moving forward, they will be featuring Lifestyle content created by some socially active and community-minded Millennials. This new brand of Millennial CEO will bring all aspects of the Millennial Lifestyle to the community and its readers, with content topics ranging from pop culture to parenting.

Each week, the Lifestyle Team will be producing and sharing content that seeks to offer Millennials valuable insights that they can actually use in their day-to-day lives. To kick things off, nearly all of the featured contributors that Millennial CEO has asked to lead the Lifestyle arm of the website have included their thoughts on what the Millennial Lifestyle means to them and how they define it.

Ben Phillips (@benfigo):

Everything you have heard about these darn “Millennials” is true.

Probably.

When we order food, the words “filter” and “gram” have nothing to do with the preparation that went into the creation of said meal. “Snapping” is not the same thing we learned to do with our fingers while watching Sesame Street. “Tagging” is no longer something that results in pigtails being yanked or knees being scraped.

Our lifestyle is indeed unique – but we wouldn’t have it any other way.

The Millennial lifestyle is not to be understood. It is to be experienced.

Stop trying to figure out why we do what we do. Don’t try to marry our rationalizations with your mode of thinking.

Instead, think of us as pioneers. After all, that’s how we want to be seen.

Tweeting may be “spectacular and amusing but virtually useless,” but that phrase was used to describe radio almost 100 years ago as well. Oops.

Remember, Lifestyles are not meant to be understood. They are defined by those who live them, and dismissed by those who are content in their comfortable ignorance.

I am quite aware of the fact that your mindset and philosophies are not inherently connected to the year you were born, either. Living the Millennial Lifestyle is more about your attitude than your age.

If you have an interest in where the future might take us, come along for the ride. We are all about the “next big thing.”

The word “Millennial” leaves a bad taste in a lot of people’s mouths. It shouldn’t, however, as there is a huge misconception around the idea of just what a Millennial is. When I think about what the “Millennial Lifestyle” means to means to me, it’s safe to say it’s probably vastly different from those who shudder when they hear the word.

The Millennial Lifestyle is all about living in a truly free and open society in which the opportunities for success are above and beyond our wildest expectations. It’s an idea that the workplace is not a prison, but a place where we can make a difference. A workplace in which it’s not about “me, me, me” – as someone would suggest – but about “how can I help?”

Ultimately, the Millennial Lifestyle is one where we do not neglect our own well-being or desires – and thus chase our dreams – while working with a mantra of #peoplefirst.

Vincenzo Landino (@vincenzolandino):

A Millennial’s expectations of themselves goes beyond the typical Lifestyle.

Millennials just aren’t satisfied with a slow and steady progression towards happiness and success.

Craving instant gratification, Millennials are looking to make things happen now. In fact, whether it be business or a cause we’re passionate about, we want it to happen yesterday.

Personally, I enjoy technology, social media, sports and pop culture. I enjoy those things so much that I want to be connected, or “plugged in”, to them at all times.

We are a generation raised on the computer, and as an older Millennial, I appreciate the best of both worlds but I identify most with the tech savvy, “live-in-the-moment” life.

Bree Kelley (@SmartSuiteBree):

We, all generations living in this day and age, have been bestowed with the blessing and curse that is, living in a digital era. This has allowed us to have access to everything, but also requires us to constantly be connected, and carries a burden and expectation to remain “plugged in.”

There are many people across all generations who reject it. Reject the change, the forward thinking, and the fast-paced, high-demand, information-overload world we live in. The rejection does not necessarily stem from close-mindedness, but out of fear = because no matter the year, change can be scary.

There are some, who have chosen to arise to the challenge before them, and embrace the ever constant change. It’s those who have adapted a particular mindset, one founded on bravery, heart, attitude, and the drive to go running toward change with open arms, instead of away from it- and have come to peace with adaption. These individuals have come to be classified as having a “Millennial” mindset.

Although this mindset stretches across age-ranges, genders, and boarders, those with it all share a common thing – a similar Lifestyle. A Lifestyle that seems to be one of the fastest paced and innovative in history. It’s a Lifestyle with the foundation to awake everyday with enthusiasm, to keep up, make a change, and establish a lasting impact that lives beyond generational timelines.

Throughout my life, it has become apparent that I am cut from a different cloth from those that precede me. My professional ambition is not rooted in financial gain, but rather in the success of the broader community. My desire to have a positive impact on other people’s lives influences almost every decision that I make. I’m not convinced that I can adequately define the Millennial Lifestyle, but my personal anecdote might help shape the broader conversation.

This Millennial enjoys using technology to build community and refuses to be confined by geography. Engaging in meaningful conversations with like-minded professionals provides great satisfaction and professional growth. This perpetual connection often makes it difficult to disconnect, which is a phenomenon shared by many others. In an effort to overcome this paradox, systems must be established to ensure that life can function.

Being connected and lifelong learning are non-negotiable when it comes to my Millennial Lifestyle. As I mentioned before, this way of life does not come without concerns. Establishing goals, setting priorities, and building organizational systems will mitigate most of the bumps along the Millennial road.

Cody Stevenson (@TheCodyVision):

Millennials are loosely defined as the generation born between 1980 and the year 2000. I personally look at Millennials as more of a mindset or a Lifestyle choice.

In my opinion, we are the innovators, the shakers and the movers, the population that wants to see change happen. Not necessarily a specific age group or generation. I mean, I have friends of all age groups that share my vision on how they want to live their lives.

We use the tools available to us to grow our community of friends and colleagues.  We see the value in finding connections throughout the world and not just in our own “backyard”.

A strong misconception is that Millennials are all about themselves.  Some have even labeled us the “Me Me Me Generation.”

I would argue that it’s the exact opposite.

We have a strong desire to build “tribes” and communities to work with on common goals.  Our willingness to be open and share our thoughts is often mistaken for “tooting our own horns”.

So what exactly is the “Millennial Lifestyle” in my eyes? To me, it is crafting the world you live in to be something that you would be proud to hand down to generations for years to come. Above all else, it is the hustle that makes these changes happen.

When you wake up yourself, ask yourself: “Am I truly happy about the task I am going to work on today?” If the answer is no, I recommend you start making the changes in your life so the answer is always YES!

When I hear someone use the term ‘Millennial,’ I typically grimace inside, fully expecting the next sentence or sentiment shared to be a harsh or cynical one. Try as I might, I just can’t seem to shake the feeling that many see Millennials – and in turn, the Millennial Lifestyle – in a negative light.

I mean, do we really want too much too quickly in the workplace? Or are we actually not willing to work as hard as our parents, while expecting twice as much to come our way?

I don’t buy it.

To me, the Millennial Lifestyle is all about believing in someone’s abilities, regardless of their age, race, gender, years of experience and all the rest of it. The Millennial Lifestyle is fuelled by maximum effort combined with perpetual optimism. Millennials are driven to prove their doubters wrong, create the best possible life for themselves and their loved ones, and above all else, find their place in a busy, noisy world.

The Millennial Lifestyle is focused on making a difference on every level – professionally, socially, politically and economically. Millennials refuse to accept that “things have always been done this way,” and are committed to finding solutions that fit the present, while trying to honour and salute the past.
